FOUR unfit women drivers are abandoning their taxis for the day and stepping onto the sands for an eight-mile trek in aid of cancer care.
The Coastal cabbies have been spurred on to undertake the Cross Bay challenge after colleague Penny Baines was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 30.
Three years on and Penny is still waiting for the all-clear.
She will be joined by Sarah Burnett, Sarah Wheel and Denise Collyer on July 11 and all proceeds will help the Royal Lancaster Infirmary fund equipment to catch breast cancer in its early stages.
Penny, who still has check-ups at RLI, says everything possible needs to be done to fund mobile screening units so more women can be tested.
She says the foursome chose the walk because it will push them to the limit.
"We wanted a challenge and because none of us walk anywhere, we thought it would be very difficult. We are very unhealthy women and so will find it tough, but we are determined to do it."
The troupe is still looking for sponsors to help them bring in at least £1,000 to fund the mobile screening units. To make a donation or sponsor the women call into the Coastal taxi office on Queen Street, Morecambe.
