LANCASTER City Council has recently issued notices about arrangement for postal voting in the European Parliamentary elections.
I wonder how many potential voters have read the small print and realise that there is a clear requirement to have their signatures witnessed on the ballot paper - a rule I believe will make the system fatally flawed.
If the witness requirement is not complied with the vote will be null and void. And how many people who are aware of the requirement will seek witnesses who may themselves be reluctant to provide their signatures?
Who, anyway, wants their signature witnessed in these days of increasing fraud?
In principle, postal voting has much to recommend it. It should make it easier to vote without having to queue up in a dingy hall - but this requirement will have the effect of turning off potential voters in droves.
The bright spark who devised this ludicrous system should be voted 'nul points'.
