BURY Chess Club's third team are already celebrating winning the D Division Championship and with promotion already in the bag, one match remained.
All proved easier than expected however, when their opponents, the University, were unable to field a team, and defaulted the match.
With the second team also promoted from C Division, and the third team still with prospects of winning the Alfred Milner knock-out Trophy, it has been a successful season.
Eyes are now on the Club Championship finals.
In the quarter finals, scores were: Keith Evans 1, Terry Goldsmith 0; Anthony Lee 1.5, Bernard Sharples 0.5; Jim Litherland 1, John Altham 0; Mick Norris 1, John Grindrod 0.
In the semis Keith lost to Ant, and Jim to Mick, setting up a Lee v Norris final.
Meanwhile, the subsidiary section produced an amazing series of victories for the Black pieces: Shiraz Khalil 1, Martin Bryant 0; Jeremy Peach 0, Lee Baron 1; Syd Forrester 0, Brian Forrest 1; Geoff Kerr 0, Paul Mole 1.
This continued in the semis, with Shiraz losing to Lee, and Brian to Paul, so that the final is Lee Baron v Paul Mole.
