From the Guide files of Friday, June 1, 1979: TEN-MONTH-OLD Lynn Guider, from Cromwell Road, Whitefield, won a Bonny Baby Contest. The tiny tot was entered in the competition, organised by Stand All Saints Church, by her mother, Mrs Jillian Guider.
SELF-EMPLOYED chartered accountant Mr Len Fish appeared on the Jimmy Tarbuck quiz show, Winner Takes All. Mr Fish, of Park Road, Prestwich, stood to win £1,000 from the show and the chance to reappear on future editions if he won.
A POSTHUMOUS award was given to Mrs Dorothy Morton for long service to the Girl Guides. Mrs Morton died unexpectedly around six months before the Manchester County 'Thanks Badge' was presented to her husband, Kenneth. A former Lieutenant and Captain of the 6th Prestwich (Sedgley Park Meths) Guide Company, Mrs Morton had served 29 years.
CHARGE nurse Michael Murphy retired from Prestwich Hospital after working there for just over 34 years. Mr Murphy (60), of Heys Road, started as a student nurse and worked his way up. His son, Michael Jnr also worked at the hospital as a psychiatric nurse.
A POLICE officer lay in wait in Whitefield CP School to catch some young thieves. The officer managed to catch a 14-year-old and 15-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl stealing chalk, books and other items worth £4 after they broke in through a skylight at 8pm.
