POLICE in Burnley today appealed for witnesses after a 74-year-old woman was knocked to the ground and left badly bruised by a bag snatcher.
Hazel Phethean had crossed Todmorden Road and was heading along Stewart Street when she was approached from behind by a man. He pulled the bag from her and knocked her to the ground leaving her with a badly bruised arm.
Two men who heard the woman's cries for help chased the offender but he got away. He headed towards some derelict garages near to the Woodman Pub and was last seen at the rear of terraced houses at the top of Oxford Road.
The incident happened at around 9.35am on Stewart Street, Burnley, last Saturday, May 21, although police have only just released details.
Officers are now appealing for people to give them information.
Detective Constable Tim Maddox said: "This incident, which left a woman with extensive bruising, took place not far from the Spar shop. We'd like to hear from anyone who may have been at the shop or nearby who may have seen something that might help our inquiries.
"We'd particularly like to hear from anyone who saw a man acting suspiciously in the area prior to the attack and from anyone who saw the offender being chased who may be able to give us a description or identify him."
