A MAN has been charged with causing the death of a five-year-old Leigh boy in a road accident outside his home.
The 40-year-old, who has not been named by police, is due to appear before Wigan Magistrates Court on Monday.
Victim Ryan Ashbrook sustained fatal injuries in the accident on Friday evening outside his home in Hope Street, Leigh.
Police later charged the defendant with causing death by dangerous driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and a number of other offences.
The youngster was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital after the accident at 7.10pm but was declared dead on arrival.
His parents, Melvin Ashbrook, aged 31, and Joanne Lock, also aged 31, said in a statement: "Ryan will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
"He attended St John's Infants School in Leigh where he was popular with his teachers and classmates alike.
"He was a happy and fun-loving child who was always laughing. Ryan loved spending time playing out with his friends and playing football with his older brother, Jason.
"We spent a lot of time with him and are devastated by this tragedy."
Inspector Chris Burrows, of Leigh traffic police, said Ryan had been with a group of other children when the accident happened.
Police are appealing for witnesses to contact Leigh traffic police on 0161 856 7202.
