A MAN has appeared in court charged with serious motoring offences following the death of a five-year-old-boy in Leigh.

Amjad Mahmood, aged 40, of Taunton Avenue, Leigh, appeared at Wigan Magistrates on Monday charged with death by dangerous driving, attempting to pervert the course of justic, failing to stop after an accident and failing to report an accident.

Ryan Thomas Ashbrook was in the road with a group of other children in Hope Street, Leigh, when it is thought he ran into the road and was struck by a vehicle at 7.10pm on Friday.

Ryan, who lived in the Leigh area, was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital but pronounced dead on arrival.

Mahmood was bailed to appear at a later date.

Police are still appealing for information from people who witnessed the incident.
