SOME OF Britain's top cyclists are heading to the region to take part in the East Lancashire Bike Fest.

Riders from across the UK are expected to flock to Pendle, which is staging the sporting event this summer.

Details of the cycling extravaganza, unveiled today, include a string of events for amateur riders as well as the Colne Grand Prix, involving the British Cycling Federation.

The 50-lap race around a 1km town centre circuit will be held on July 21 and is expected to feature up to 100 of the nation's best bikers. It is one of a national series of 10 races.

All the top series contenders are expected to enter, including the recycling.co.uk, Pinarello and Persil teams, and it is also hoped that the Great Britain Olympic track endurance team might be able to fit the event into their schedule before their departure for Athens.

The course is ideal for racing, fast and wide, around the town centre one-way system, with two long straights separated by wide sweeping corners, and a slight climb into the finishing straight on each lap to add to the interest.

A cycle show will also be held in the borough on July 24 with cycling and stunt displays and an opportunity to ride unusual bikes, including a Penny Farthing and bikes adapted for people with disabilities.

Mark Sandamas, from Pennine Events Limited which is organising the festival, said: "The first East Lancs Bike Fest last year was a big success and was well received and we are really looking forward to developing the event further this year.

"The involvement of the British Cycling Federation and some of the best riders in the country is a great coup."
