BLACKBURN Rovers have scotched reports they are set to blow their entire transfer kitty on Belgian defender Daniel van Buyten.
The £4m-rated Marseille ace, who made six appearances on loan at Manchester City last season before his campaign was cut short by a groin injury, is currently looking for another club.
However, Ewood chiefs today confirmed that no follow-up to an initial enquiry is now planned.
And with boss Graeme Souness already aware that he will have just £4m to spend this summer, any suggestion of a deal is seemingly dead in the water.
Chief executive John Williams said: "It is true to say we made an initial enquiry about Daniel some two or three weeks ago.
"We were interested at that stage. However, an enquiry is all it was and we will not be taking it any further."
Van Buyten's agent had told national newspapers that Rovers were in talks to buy the 29-year-old and boost their defensive options.
He said: "I have been told by people from Marseille that Blackburn have talked to them about Daniel.
"The question is whether they will pay the £4m it will cost to buy him. I know the Blackburn chairman has spoken to Marseille, but I've still to hear anything from him."
Meanwhile, Rovers are closer to learning whether Turkish midfielder Tugay will be tempted back by a new offer.
The player's agent jetted out to Turkey earlier today with written conformation of a new offer that would keep him at Ewood for another year - plus a possible extension.
Galatasaray are desperately trying to lure Tugay 'home' with an offer that the 33-year-old has admitted interests him.
And Ewood officials are now anxiously awaiting developments from Turkey.
Rovers are also hoping to tie up a new deal with Jonathon Douglas in the near future.
The Irish international is currently holed up with the national side, halting protracted talks over a new contract.
But Williams said:" These things take time. People can't understand why such things can't be done quickly.
"But Jonathon is still away with Ireland and we will talk again as soon as he returns."
