SCHOOLS in Burnley are competing for part of a £50,000 prize fund in a national competition.
The Yellow Woods Challenge is a campaign by Yellow Pages and the Woodland Trust.
To take part pupils have to take old Yellow Pages directories to school for recycling and the schools that collect the most directories per pupil will win cash prizes.
For every pound given to schools by Yellow Pages, a matching pound is given to the Woodland Trust to help keep the UK's native woodland alive.
Burnley Council is organising this year's challenge and is encouraging schools in the borough to take part.
Schools could win up to £300 locally and then compete nationally for the chance to win up to £2,000.
Last year Worsthorne Primary School collected the most directories per pupil in the borough.
Helen Williams, a community environmental officer with the council, said: "Taking part in the Yellow Woods Challenge last year encouraged schools and local communities to do their bit for the environment.
"We must build on last year's success and support schools by giving them old Yellow Pages directories for recycling."
The closing date for the collection runs until Monday, June 21.
