A READY, Steady, Dig scheme has been launched by Bents Garden Centre in Glazebury to encourage children away from computers and play stations and into the great outdoors.
With plants featuring as a key area of study on the National Curriculum, the Ready, Steady, Dig scheme is specifically aimed at primary schools.
Open to groups of up to 30 children and their teachers it involves two hours of fun, learning and hands-on experience; all with the aim of introducing children to the joys of gardening.
Centre owner Ron Bent said: "Times have definitely changed and parents are understandably concerned about their children playing in the streets where they can't easily keep an eye on them. But this shouldn't mean that children have to stay indoors.
"The back garden is a great playground and no matter what size or type, whether it is large lawned area or a small patio there is so much that can be enjoyed.
"Gardening provides a great opportunity for children to get outdoors and enjoy a healthy and refreshing pastime. The Ready, Steady, Dig scheme is just one way we can help to encourage them to do so."
One of the first schools to visit was St Thomas's Primary from Leigh, pictured, who got some tuition from Caron Littler who runs the planting workshops.
