A COMPETITION founded to commemorate the end of the Great War tees off at Leigh Golf Club.
The battle for the District Victory Trophy starts on June 12 with contestants vying for the Junior Victory Trophy at Gathurst on August 26 and for the Senior Victory Trophy at Dean Wood on September 17.
The competition was founded in 1920 and organised by four of the current clubs Leigh, Hindley Hall, Ashton and Haydock Park.
The first tournament at Hindley Hall was for a singles medal played over 18 holes and won by home player J J Broughton. During the second year a team competition was introduced.
In 1923 it changed to be played over 36 holes and has remained so ever since.
The contest grew over the years with more clubs being admitted, but from 1940-46 the competition was interrupted by WWll.
It resumed in 1947 but Leigh Golf Club did not re-enter until 1964. In 1956 the Wigan Chamber of Commerce presented the Hulbert Powell Trophy to be played for as a team handicap trophy.
Over the years the competition has been modified to include team events and in 1968 was renamed The Wigan and District Victory Trophy. This is awarded to the player with the best nett score for 36 holes, while the Victory Shield is awarded to the club with the best team gross score and the Hulbert Powell Trophy to the club with the best nett score.
Similar competitions have been developed for junior and senior golfers, juniors playing 36 holes and seniors 18.
