LEIGH Harriers Rebecca Howarth and Hannah Warburton won silver and bronze medals at the Northern Track and Field Championships at Robin Park.
Howarth,15, ran the race of her life in the ladies U17s 1500m final. Always up with the leaders, she went through 800m in 2:37. She made her move with 150m left and was just beaten into second place in 4:52, knocking seven seconds off her PB.
Warburton and Lauren Howarth both qualified for the girls U15s 1500m final. Warburton won her heat with Howarth finishing in third place.
In the final Warburton was up with the leaders, going through 800m in 2:27. She surged to the front with 600m left but was caught at the 300m mark and had to settle for bronze in a sprint finish. She also set a new PB of 4:51.4, inside the English Schools qualification time.
Howarth found herself trapped in the group at the start but worked hard to battle her way through the field. She had to settle for fourth place in a time of 5:01.
Thomas Boardman clocked an excellent time of 20:29 to finish fifth overall and first U18 in the Chorley 4-mile. Judith Boardman was fourth O35 in 30:52.
In the Horwich 4-mile event Phil Foster was ninth in 22:13; Jamie Hunter 13th in 22:40; Alex Urmston first U18 in 23:50; Neil Pendlebury second U18 in 24:35; Tom Henders fourth U18 in 25:27; Dale Edwards fifth U18 in 25:14; Joe Cooke 95th in 27:01 and Steve Ruffley 111th in 27:49.
In the ladies race, Adele Swanton won the U18 race in 31:20 with Amanda Fearnley second.
Eileen Castledine won the ladies O50s race in 31:47 and Sarah Cain with 28th in the ladies race. The Harriers team finished fifth overall.
