PEOPLE with learning disabilities are to get extra help to cast their postal vote in the June 10 elections.
Staff from social services and Bury Primary Care Trust will be offering support at Bury Town Hall.
Officers say that, traditionally, few people with a learning disability exercise their right to vote. With an all-out council election and a European poll on the same day, both conducted by post, they are worried that such people will be even more reluctant to vote than usual.
To publicise the help available, a group of disabled people from Bury People First were shown the ropes at the town hall on Wednesday.
Eamon Mckeown, the council's learning disabilities service manager, said: "We hope that their example will encourage other disabled people to take advantage of the support on offer and to exercise their democratic rights and responsibilities."
