VOLUNTEERS are wanted to help victims of crime.

With around 180,000 victims and witnesses of crime across Greater Manchester every year, there is a growing need for specially-trained people to provide them with emotional support, information and practical assistance.

The impact of crime causes a huge amount of hurt, anguish and misery for people in the community, which is why the Bury branch of the Victim Support and Witness Service is looking for more volunteers who are understanding and good listeners.

Their search for more help has been highlighted during National Volunteers Week which ends on Monday.(Jun 7)

Ann McKeever, Bury's volunteer recruitment and training officer, said: "Although most people recover quite quickly from crime, for many individuals, such as the elderly, children and other vulnerable groups, it can take months or even years to come to terms with the devastating and traumatic effects of crime.

"Victims often need someone to talk to in confidence, practical and emotional support, help with compensation and insurance claims, or crime reduction advice.

"Giving evidence in court can also be an extremely daunting experience, particularly if the witness has been intimidated or threatened.

"Without our charity organisation, witnesses would have no support whatsoever and many persistent and violent offenders would not be brought to justice.

Ann continued: "We are looking for volunteers who are understanding and good listeners and who can get on with people of all ages, cultures, beliefs, backgrounds and lifestyles.

"We provide training, support and supervision, together with out-of-pocket expenses. We also offer a great deal of satisfaction from knowing that volunteers are making a difference to those who have experienced trauma, distress or injury as a result of crime."

The Victim Support and Witness Service is a charity although it receives limited financial support from the Home Office for salaries and some core funding. The remainder of the money is raised through donations and the efforts of volunteers, local people and businesses.
