A RETIRING Lancashire police officer is riding off into the sunset by taking-on a tough Blackpool to Paris cycling challenge in a bid to raise funds for cancer sufferers.

Training centre officer, Inspector Wayne Howard will put his best pedal forward on a 2,200 mile journey from Blackpool Tower to the Eiffel Tower in aid of Rosemere Cancer Foundation on June 12.

Wayne decided to undertake the epic six-week journey in memory of colleagues PC Mark Jukes and Inspector Keith Butterworth - both of whom tragically succumbed to the disease within the last two years.

So far Wayne - who intends to complete the gruelling Tour de France 2000 route which includes the French Alps - has secured more than £4,500 sponsorship from local businesses and organisations.

But he is looking for more individuals and businesses to pledge money for the event which will raise badly needed funding for Rosemere who provide care and support to cancer patients.

Wayne said: "Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer and I wanted to use my sporting background to raise both awareness and a significant sum of money.

"I chose the Rosemere Cancer Foundation as it does such a sterling job funding cancer care throughout Lancashire and Cumbria."

Chief Constable Paul Stephenson said: "This is a magnificent example of commitment and dedication which are the hallmarks of so many Lancashire Constabulary officers.

"I am pleased to see that Wayne intends to put his retirement to such good use on behalf of such a worthy cause, particularly as it will be in memory of two former colleagues.

"I wish him well on his travels."

Wayne is set to chart his progress each day in a diary which will be updated on his website www.waynestour.org.uk.

Anyone wishing to sponsor him should contact Wayne directly on 01772 412376.
