LIKE many people, I was amazed at Bury Council's U-turn in deciding to continue the weekly black bin service, but I then had second thoughts. I have canvassed in several wards and they have all complained about the muddle of Bury's new multi-bin system.
The Labour Group's decision is based on one calculation: they are liable to be defeated on June 10.
The "promise" to re-introduce the weekly collection is for June 14. If we treat this as a usual Labour promise, there may be another change of mind if they are re-elected on June 10, that the promise is unable to be kept for "operational reasons".
The only way to guarantee the weekly collection is to vote for the candidate most likely to defeat Labour. Both the Conservative and Liberal groups on the council have promised to keep the service, we both also support re-cycling and in nearly every ward it is the Conservatives who stand most chance of unseating Labour.
