EAST Lancashire MP Nigel Evans has sprung to the defence of a pensioner banned from driving for warning motorists of a police speed trap.

Stuart Harding, 71, was convicted of wilfully obstructing a constable in the execution of his duty, had his licence taken away and ordered to pay £364 costs.

He was attempting to slow motorists down as they approached a Sunday morning car boot sale in Aldershot, where many people were crossing the road.

But as soon as the officers noticed his placard, he was cautioned for committing an offence.

Ribble Valley Tory MP Mr Evans said the conviction and sentence were "a complete disgrace''.

Mr Harding, a retired instrument maker, appeared before magistrates in Aldershot, Hants and pleaded not guilty to the charge.
