A TOWN centre was sealed off after a suspicious package was found at Labour Party Offices.

Bomb Squad officers from Chester were called to the building where Janet Anderson, MP for Darwen and Rossendale, is based in Bacup Road, Waterfoot, two hours after police initially received the call at 1pm.

But after assessing the padded envelope and finding nothing suspicious inside it, the alert was called off.

People working in shops and offices in the main street were told to stay indoors while the package was being assessed.

Traffic came to a stand still in Bacup Road as police cordoned off the area and re-directed motorists along Burnley Road East.

Crowds of people gathered on the street corners waiting for news after Labour Party worker Denise Hancock raised the alarm.

She said the package was addressed to the former Rochdale MP, Liz Lynn, which was sent in a greasy jiffy bag.
