AN AIR cadet is preparing to rub shoulders with royalty and a host of VIPs after being chosen to assist the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire.

Osian Barnett, 18, of Belle Vue Street, Blackburn, will act as The Rt Hon Lord Shuttleworth's Cadet throughout the next year.

He received his badge of office and certificate of appointment at a ceremony in Lancaster.

The role is given in rotation to the three service-linked youth organisations and the appointed cadet assists the Lord Lieutenant at services and cadet-related functions throughout the year. In the past the role has involved accompanying the Lord Lieutenant at official opening ceremonies, charity events and also assisting when he escorts members of the Royal family around the region.

Osian, a member of Blackburn's 1262 Squadron of the Air Training Corps' East Lancashire Wing, was accompanied at the ceremony by his proud father and mother, Roy and Carol Barnett.

Osian said: "About three months ago I received a letter saying I had been awarded it. You have to be really committed to get the role and also have been in the cadets a long time and I have done most things you can do in the cadets.

"You have to put in a lot of effort because you only get out what you put in. My parents are ecstatic about it. They really can't believe it."

Osian is studying at St Mary's College, Blackburn, and hopes for a flying career with the Royal Air Force.
