YOUNGSTERS in Walmersley can look forward to a long summer of sport with the unveiling of the borough's latest Ball Zone.
The Mayor of Bury, Councillor Wilf Davison, officially opened the multi-use zone which is in Hartley Gardens, off Palatine Drive.
It's the result of efforts by Walmersley Tenants' and Residents' Association (TRA), which was set up last year to give children better facilities. During the campaign, young people formed their own youth committee and raised funds to go on trips and hold a weekly youth social group.
Joan Currie, chairman of Walmersley TRA, thanked Bury Council and also Christ Church for the use of their hall where the youth social group meets.
The launch party featured sports and games organised by the council's sports development team, and demonstrations were given by the boys and girls teams of the Bury Blue Devils basketball club. Also present was the Youth bus, from the youth ofending team, which offered internet sessions, computer games, video and music, and arts/crafts. And Bury FC's mascot Robbie the Bobby also got in on the action.
