TEACHERS of special needs children could be allowed to adapt the national curriculum and come up with a new way of teaching maths.

Lancashire County Council wants to take the lead on how best to progress with adapting the curriculum for SEN pupils aged 11 to 14 following a conference in the North East this week.

Teachers in East Lancashire could get specific training on how to teach maths to SEN pupils instead of simply having to adapt the national curriculum.

Joe Murray, Key Stage 3 maths consultant at county hall, said: "This is a relatively undeveloped area, but one which Lancashire is keen to take the lead on.

"The conference was such a success that it is likely to lead to consultants from other areas of the country organising something similar.

"A team of advisers from LEAs all over the North West worked together on the conference. We received the same message from everyone - it is difficult to adapt mainstream teaching materials to suit SEN pupils."
