Whitehaven 30 Leigh Centurions 34 by Mike Hulme: TOMMY Martyn climbed off the treatment table to score the try that sent the Centurions into their second successive Arriva Trains Cup Final.

Leigh's talisman only declared himself fit on Saturday after having round the clock treatment on a knee injury, so no wonder coach Darren Abram praised his medical team as he saw Martyn snatch the winning try just four minutes from the end of a dramatic and heart-stopping semi final.

"The medics worked wonders," said Abram. "We knew how important Tommy was to us, so he and the physio pulled out all the stops. Now we've got our reward."

Leigh will now meet fellow National League One rivals Hull KR in the final at Rochdale on July 18.

In a sensational game, the tie ebbed one way and then the other, Leigh swept into an 18-2 lead just before half time only for Whitehaven to come roaring back. With less then four minutes left the Cumbrians were ahead 30-28, but then up popped Martyn to shrug off one tackle and stretch through two more for the try that gave Leigh victory.

Leigh drew first blood through Dave Larder and then Neil Turley struck twice. His first was a dazzling solo effort from inside his own half and for the second he got on the end of a Martyn chip kick to make it 18-2.

Whitehaven began their fight back with an interception try from Jamie Marshall and another moments later from Wesley Wilson. A couple of goals from Mick Nanyn had the home side behind by just four points.

Danny Halliwell increased Leigh's lead from a John Duffy kick but immediately after half time Marshall scored his second. A Damian Munro try kept Leigh's noses in front but they looked in trouble again when Sam Obst rounded Turley to touchdown.

A Nanyn penalty levelled the scores and another successful kick from the 'Haven centre put his team ahead for the first time since early in the game.

Despite the arrears, Leigh kept their composure and after the outstanding Halliwell had gone close, Martyn produced his touch of match-winning magic.
