A WOMAN pedestrian was on her way home from a Blackpool nightclub when she died in an horrific accident on the M55 on Saturday, police say.

According to witnesses, Winifred Doran from Liverpool was struck first by one car, then another, as she wandered barefoot down the middle lane of the eastbound M55 near to Woodplumpton. Police are still investigating why the 27-year-old was on the carriageway with no shoes, handbag or any identification, apparently trying to flag down cars.

DI Martin Kay of Preston Police said: "We are quite clear that she got out of a vehicle at the side of the motorway.

"But investigations are still ongoing."

He added: "What we have found out is that on the night in question the deceased had been to Heaven and Hell nightclub in Blackpool and was returning home from that night out when she was on the motorway and was struck by two motor vehicles."

Police closed the motorway and both drivers were treated for shock, before being interviewed later by police.

Officers are also awaiting the results of a post mortem examination.

An inquest into the woman's death has also been opened.

A Lancashire Police spokesman added: "The police ask that any person who may have been using the motorway at that time, or immediately before.

"Anyone who saw anything should contact officers on 01772 203203."
