A 78-YEAR-old woman was pushed to the ground and robbed as she walked through a Burnley town centre subway.

The pensioner was walking through the subway by Gala Bingo, in Centenary Way, when the robber struck, causing her to fall to the ground and hit her head.

He stole a leather handbag, containing make-up and a red tartan umbrella.

Detective Sergeant Derek Jones of Burnley CID said the victim was not hurt in the attack and it is not yet known if the robber was targeting bingo-goers.

He said: "The woman was lucky to escape injury.

"We are interested to hear from anybody who may have seen the offender loitering about the area prior to the robbery and appeal for any witnesses to contact us."

The robber is described as white, aged about 20, 6ft tall and of slim build with shaven hair. He was wearing a blue waterproof jacket, navy blue tracksuit and trainers.

Anyone with information about the robbery, which happened at about 2.55pm on Sunday, should call Burnley CID on 01282 472144 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
