BURY manager Graham Barrow has re-signed striker Jon Newby on a two year contract.

The former Liverpool player put pen to paper on Monday morning after ending a miserable spell with Huddersfield Town by mutual consent.

Newby is the second Huddersfield player to link up with the Shakers this summer after midfielder Dwayne Mattis agreed a one year deal last week.

The popular Warrington-born player joined the Shakers from Anfield in January 2001, initially on loan, and soon became a firm favourite with the Gigg Lane fans.

After an impressive start he signed for the club permanently but due to financial restrictions he wasn't offered a contract - much to his disappointment - when his two year deal expired last summer.

Peter Jackson wasted no time in taking him to the McAlpine Stadium but things didn't work out for the 25-year-old and he struggled to make his mark following a knee operation.

Left out in the cold he was a regular face in the South Stand last season and his great affection for the club is no secret.

Barrow is understandably delighted to pick up the pacey forward who has had plenty of offers from other clubs in recent weeks.

"Jon is a great capture for us, he is quality" he said.

"He was one of two or three players who stood out to me when I first came to the club.

"There is a determination inside Jon after the year he had at Huddersfield. I don't think Peter Jackson had seen him before he signed him and when that happens sometimes you have a wrong mental picture of a player.

"Obviously he saw something in him that didn't suit their style of play but I have no qualms about signing him, in fact we could benefit from the quiet year he had there."

Barrow also believes that when Newby was at the club the last time he may have benefited from a break after sometimes looking jaded.

"In his defence I thought there were a couple of times he could have been rested," he explained.

"But it's easy to say that if you are not the manager at the time and I understood why Andy Preece wanted him to play.

"I remember before the Wrexham game at the end of his last season we rested a number of players before the play-offs.

"I thought he was close to being burned out that year and really needed a break but he argued his case to play with Andy and won.

"That's why I have a lot of time for him, he gives you everything he's got on the pitch and in training.

"He's a good player, a decent lad and I'm more than delighted to have him back."

Newby and Mattis may not be the only new arrivals through the Gigg gates this week.

Hopes are high that a deal with influential defender Dave Challinor could be close to completion - a big signing that would delight the Shakers faithful.

"The problem with the Challinor signing has been between him and Stockport County but thankfully that seems to be getting sorted out now," added Barrow.

A left sided player and another striker are still on the manager's wanted list and he remains hopeful of getting the squad he wants together before the big kick-off against Yeovil on Saturday, August 7.

"It does get frustrating but I'm reasonable satisfied that things are coming together for us now.

"Our hard work is paying off and sometimes it can pay to be a bit patient when chasing players."
