RADCLIFFE'S Water Polo squad came out on top in the recent Manchester and District under-14's Water Polo tournament at Varley Street Swimming Pool.

The finals consisted of four teams who had all qualified through the group stages.

The first match of the finals was between Radcliffe and Failsworth.

Failsworth, who had finished top of their group in the heats, got off to the worst possible start as some silly defensive errors allowed the sharp Radcliffe team to slip in and score two very good goals.

But soon after, Radcliffe fell asleep and Failsworth managed to grab a goal, which kept them in with a chance of victory.

However, in the final minutes of the first half, Radcliffe scored to give themselves a 3-1 lead at the break.

Substitutions were made at half-time and the changes paid off as Radcliffe put the game beyond reach with two quick goals on their way to a 6-2 victory.

Radcliffe's next match was against fierce rivals Stretford and an early Ben Jennings goal put Radcliffe in good spirits for the match. This was followed by three more, all in Radcliffe's favour.

But, Stretford's attacking talents shone through and the score at the break was 4-3.

Early in the second half, Radcliffe's Sam Barrow got the ball and scored two goals in quick succession.

Then, two great shots resulted in two goals for Radcliffe's David Kelly; the game finishing 9-4.

Other results meant that Radcliffe only needed a draw in their final match to secure the title.

This was against the in-form Royton who soon stormed into the lead.

However, just before half-time Radcliffe levelled the match through Ben Jennings.

Again, three substitutions were made at half-time, resulting in an early second half goal from Scott Evans and two from Sam Barrow.

But Radcliffe switched off for a time and Royton capitalised with a goal.

However, their joy was short-lived as Radcliffe's Louis Szymanski hit the target before David Kelly did the same.

Radcliffe prevailed 8-2 and won the title.

other players competing in the victorious Radcliffe team were Emily Brown, Michael Thomasson, Harry Sykes, Callum Hall and Megan Hughes.
