WORKMEN have started work to create a new sports park in Rossendale.

Contractors working on behalf of Groundwork Rossendale have begun re-surfacing the old school site in Stubbylee Park, Bacup.

They are expected to complete work on the sports facility for bicycles and skateboards by late summer and re-surfacing work to the tennis courts within the park will also be carried out.

Claire Sims, of Groundwork Rossendale, said: "We apologise greatly for any inconvenience and disappointment caused by this work as the tennis courts will not be open for use while the improvements are taking place.

"We do not want to delay this work as this may result in the tennis courts not being available for use throughout the summer holidays."

The work is being carried out as part of a three-year project to improve Stubbylee Park after being highlighted as high priority during a community consultation.

It is being delivered in partnership with Groundwork Rossendale, Bacup Consortium, Stubbylee Park Steering Group and Rossendale Council and funded by Lancashire Small Sites Reclamation Programme, the council and the Single Regeneration Budget.
