APPLICATIONS are being invited for a licence to provide an FM commercial radio service to cover Blackburn and the surrounding area.

The Office of Communications (Ofcom) estimates this licence could achieve coverage of an area with an adult population (aged 15+) of around 150,000.

It will cover Darwen, Accrington, Clayton-le-Moors, and Great Harwood, although the exact coverage will be determined by the location of the transmission site and other technical characteristics.

Any group will be entitled to apply for the licence - including Burn FM, who work in partnership with the Lancashire Evening Telegraph, Milestone Radio, Blackburn Rovers and a number of local shareholders.

Burn FM has already had four successful trials and another consortium's station The Bee, two trials.

Closing date for the submission of completed applications will be 5pm on Thursday, September 23 and the licence will be issued for a 12-year period.

A decision will be announced within two weeks of the closing date.
