TWO pupils at an Accrington school are heading out to India to see the fruits of their charity work at an orphanage.

The girls, from St Christopher's C of E High School, Queen's Road West, will represent the school in the Indian town of Salem, about 200 miles South of Madras.

Bethany Seymour, of Oswaldtwistle, and Sarah Cornall, of Clayton-le-Moors, both 15, will be making the epic journey on behalf of staff and Year Ten pupils at the school, to deliver the £800 charity money raised over the year.

The orphanage is the year's chosen charity.

Headteacher Alasdair Coates said: "It's a wonderful opportunity for the girls. It isn't just a travel opportunity, it's almost a vocation for them. One of the girls has considered missionary life and this will be a foretaste. It really is a once in a lifetime opportunity."

The link to the orphanage, Shining Faces in India, was organised by one of the school's benefactors, Nicholas Wainwright, managing director of North West-based jewellery firm, Boodle and Dunthorne.

Mr Wainwright, who helped set up the orphanage, had visited the school a number of times, to speak to students. He helped the school set up a link for fundraising.

The girls will be travelling to India with Geography teacher Keith Jackson, on July 10. Mr Jackson will be keeping a video diary of the event, to show the school upon their return.

The charity cheque was raised thanks to the pupils and staff, through charity events, including a talent show and a bike ride.

Mr Coates said: "They aren't just going to see it, they're going to take the money and personally present it, and when they come back they will be able to interest other pupils in the project."
