A COUNCILLOR today hit out at a colleague for opposing plans to build a much-needed community centre in Pendle.

And, in a further blast, Coun Mohammed Iqbal accused Coun Donna Caley of ignoring the needs of residents. The broadside follows a decision by the council's Nelson Committee to refuse planning permission to build a community centre in Midland Street, Nelson.

Councillors heard concerns from resident Mohammed Salem about parking difficulties the centre would create. Despite a petition of support, signed by 53 people, the application was rejected mainly because of parking fears. Labour Coun Iqbal, who represents Bradley ward, said the centre would have created a much-needed amenity in the ward as there is no private or council-owned community centre at present.

He said: "New councillors should be supporting residents and not saying there are issues over parking when the officer's report says it is not an issue. The applicant is trying to invest money in the town. I am appalled at Coun Caley for opposing a centre in the heart of the community."

The plans were to renovate the building, a former shop, and build a two-storey extension. A report to councillors said a condition of approval could be to limit opening hours to tackle parking problems.

LibDem Coun Caley said: "I agree with Coun Iqbal a community centre is needed. If this had a car park it would be a different matter. I think there is a definite need for a community centre. I just think the site is totally unsuitable."
