HOUSEHOLDERS in Radcliffe are being told they cannot dispose of rubbish at the Cemetery Road site if they do not have the right kind of vehicle.

Mr David Norman, of Victoria Street, went along to the disposal site with bin bags containing household waste.

He said: "I have a Land Rover Discovery 4x4 and put the bags of rubbish in the back. Whatever the binmen will not take, I have to take to the tip myself."

Mr Norman realised when he arrived at the site, that the barrier over the roadway was too low to get his vehicle through, so he parked his car and began to carry the bags over to the waste site. He said: "I was stopped by a woman with a clipboard, who was sitting with two other people near the entrance and told that I could not take my bags on foot as people had been abusing the site and throwing builders' waste into the yard.

"I told them it was household waste and even opened the bags to show them, but they said I would have to take it to Raikes Lane in Bolton or Every Street at Fernhill in Bury.

"I am a council tax payer and should be entitled to use this site, no matter what kind of vehicle I drive. I feel like I am being ripped off, it's ridiculous. And if this carries on, people will start fly-tipping because they won't want to take their rubbish elsewhere."

Greater Manchester Waste Authority, which oversees the site at Cemetery Road, were unavailable for comment.
