THE new home of Hyndburn Athletics Club was officially opened today in Clayton-le-Moors.

After months of fund-raising, £460,000 has helped upgrade the 30-year-old cinder track on Wilson's Playing Fields into a state-of-the-art facility.

Athletes in the area now have access to steeplechase facilities, hammer and discuss throwing cages, pole vault, high jump and long jump areas.

The track was officially opened despite a heavy downfall by Britain's number one high-jumper and Olympic hopeful Susan Jones.

Joe Balko, manager of Hyndburn Sports Centre, said: "The improved athletic facility will provide new competitive opportunities for Hyndburn and the whole of East Lancashire.

"We hope that local schools will make full use of its potential."

The track has been funded by a number of different organisations, including the East Lancashire Partnership, SITA, Hyndburn Athletics Club and the borough council.

One of the first events to take place on the track is a family fun event on Sunday, when schools and the general public will be given a chance to test out the new facilities.
