ATHERTON dentist Stephen Hindley hopes to spend more time gardening and golfing now he's retired after 27 years practising in the town.

Mr Hindley set up on Mayfield Street with his partner Kip Partington in 1977 -- one of just two dental practices in the Atherton area.

He says Atherton has been a "lovely place to work" and working with townsfolk immensley rewarding.

Mr Hindley was surprised and delighted to receive many messages of appreciation from patients for his service to the community.

Raised in Farnworth, he served in the Navy as a dental officer and was stationed at Plymouth between 1971 and 76.

Now he intends to pursue his hobbies, support Bolton Wanderers and spend more time with his family. He and his wife, Maura, have been married for 33 years and have two sons, Chris and Matthew, and a daughter, Gemma.
