ELVIS impersonator Steve King will become a legend this summer - after quitting his £30,000-a-year job to jet off to Ibiza.

The father-of-five, who only discovered his talent while singing to the car radio, has been booked for a season of hotel shows less than a year after making his debut.

Steve landed the work after appearing across Lancashire following his appearance at St Stephen's Club, in Whalley Range, Blackburn, last November.

He lives in Blackburn's Beardwood area and has worked in local government for 25 years, including eight years as a Pendle Council highways officer and two years as Blackburn with Darwen Council's principal transport planner.

Originally from the south of England, the 44-year-old grew up listening to rock bands Pink Floyd, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath and Led Zepplin.

He noticed his vocal likeness to the rock star on August 18 last year - the anniversary of Elvis Presley's death in 1977.

His wife, Tracey, said: "Steve was a rocker when he was younger. But I always thought there was something about him that reminded me of Elvis - and it was his voice.

"After hearing him singing in the car, I bought him an Elvis CD."

Steve later bought a PA system and sang using backing tracks. He added: "I didn't have to force my voice, it just came naturally. I'm a bit of an extrovert and love performing.

"I've given up work and hope to make a living from singing. I'm taking a risk but I'm really enjoying it."

He believes Elvis's music crosses generations and cultures. "Elvis covered blues, rock 'n' roll and country, and recorded almost 500 songs. There's plenty to choose from. And a lot of older women particularly like my show. The music probably reminds them of their youth."

After a Blackpool Winter Gardens contest this year, he was approached by an agent to appear in a television advert for internet firm AOL, due for broadcast later this year. It features him singing Suspicious Minds in Blackpool.

Then the Ibiza contract arrived from another showbiz agent connected to Blackpool. Steve ran the idea past his family. He said: "I couldn't and wouldn't do it without their approval."

Tracey added: "I didn't believe it at first. But Steve showed me a text message offering work in Ibiza. I told him to go for it. He's worked 25 years and he's got to do what makes him happy."

Tracey and daughters Yvonne, Maxime, Toni, Jay and Amy will visit Steve in Ibiza.

Before he leaves for the three-month stint, Steve will perform at Nelson's Palatine Club on Friday, August 6, and Blackburn's King George's Hall on Saturday, August 7.
