CONGRATULATIONS to the borough's new deputy Mayor, Leigh East Councillor Brian Jarvis.

His appointment means that the town will have its first true Leigh Mayor of the borough for 15 years for the next civic year.

The last Leigh representative to become first citizen was Manxman, the late Cllr David Caley in 1988-89, but the last true Leyther was Higher Folder Jimmy Jones in the previous year.

Since the Metro was formed in 1974, this side of the borough has had its fair share of representation wearing the gold chain of office, so no one can complain.

In the last dozen years alone eight have held the honoured position including Arthur Wright (Tyldesley/Atherton) 1992-3, Joe Clarke (Atherton) 1993-4, Stan Simmons (Hindley Green ) 1994-5, Bernard Holt (Lowton) 1995-6, Sam Little (Tyldesley) 1998-9, Bill and Evelyn Smith 1999-2000 and John Hilton (Golborne) 2001-2.

And for the second time since millennium year a husband and wife council team will be Mayor and Mayoress. Brian's Leigh West ward wife, Barbara, will be a great help in the role of consort.

I'm sure the couple in waiting are delighted to carry out the responsibilities of deputies this year -- they're wearing the old Leigh Mayoral chains at official functions, and no-one will be prouder than Brian in those.
