ORGANISERS of Helmshore's annual gala made a break from tradition to turn the event into a non-religious occasion.

And participants didn't let the rain dampen their spirits as they enjoyed the weekend's event.

The parish of St Thomas, Flaxmoss, Helmshore, decided to change the format of its annual carnival this year, by extending invitations to participate to locally-based organisations.

The Reverend Norman Price suggested the carnival, which was held on Saturday and Sunday, should be open to the greater community of Helmshore in an attempt to offer the village a non-religious celebration.

He wanted to make the event an opportunity to raise money for local good causes.

Local schools, sporting groups, churches and organised groups, in the area all took part in what was marked a successful weekend.

The carnival procession set off from Haslingden Sports Centre, Helmshore Road, headed by Helmshore Brass Band, on Saturday, with local groups and brownies walking in fancy dress along York Avenue, Lancaster Drive, Broadway, Helmshore Road, Fairhill, Cherry Tree Way, and Curven Edge. A range of games, stalls and refreshments were then on offer at Helmshore Primary School's playing field.

Proceeds go to individual stall holders' own causes.
