CHARITY champion Jimmy Eaton has taken part in his last ever triathlon, proud in the knowledge that he's helped raised more than £25,000 for charity by completing the challenge.

The 55-year-old decided that his 11th triathlon, which he undertook yesterday, would be his last.

The Rossendale Conservative councillor aimed to raise enough cash to pay for a new community hospice bus - and enlisted the help of friends and Rossendale's Labour MP Janet Anderson to join him with his endurance effort.

Janet, who openly admits she's not the fittest person in the Valley, managed to swim an impressive 59 lengths at Marl Pits, in Rawtenstall.

But Jimmy, who was the real star of the show, pushed pain aside to cycle 88 miles from Bacup to Blackpool and back, swim 76 lengths and then complete a four-mile run from Rawtenstall to Bacup.

The event culminated with live music from Bacup Scout Band in the town centre to celebrate the triumphant former mayor's efforts.

The adventurous Bacup postman has become famous for his fundraising after he started 30 years ago and has now smashed the £300,000 barrier for local charities.

Coun Eaton, whose wife Janet has helped him to organise the event, said: "As I am not getting any younger I decided that this would be my last triathlon. I found the running quite tough and the weather was absolutely atrocious. I was blowing gale-force winds and the rain was lashing down but we didn't let it put us off doing what we had to do."

He added: "I would like to thank everybody behind the scenes who has supported me and to everybody who took part and pledged sponsorship.

"A special thanks goes to Fearns High School, not only did some of the teachers get involved, the youngsters took part as well and did their school proud. They have raised more than £1,500 which is fantastic.

"It's not too late for people to pledge donations as we will be collecting the money over the next two to three weeks."
