ATTEMPTS by some garages in East Lancashire to start pushing up petrol prices again are being thwarted by supermarkets, new figures have revealed.

Statistics from the AA show that the average price of a litre of unleaded fuel in the BB postcode rose from 80.15p to 80.44p last week.

In Blackburn, both Asda and Tesco are charging 77.9 a litre, down a penny on a week ago.

Prices are falling in other areas. At the Shell petrol station in Rising Bridge, the price of a litre of unleaded has fallen 1p to 78.9p, while Accrington's Esso garage in Manchester Road, BP in Hyndburn Road and Total in Church have stuck at 79.9p.

The supermarkets in are also winning in Burnley. Both Tesco and Asda are charging 77.9p, a price matched by Kitchens Total Service Station.

In Pendle, Colne's Total TCS Service Station is matching Asda's price.

Prices tend to be higher in rural areas. The BP service station in Clitheroe, Chatburn Service Station and the Primrose service station in Whalley Road, Clitheroe, are all charging 80.9p.
