GREENMOUNT's crucial Bolton League battle with third placed Walkden was decided by a superb individual performance from David Smith.

He took 5-30 off 12 overs to leave Greenmount, who started the day in second place, all out for only 81.

When Walkden batted, Smith again took the honours, his innings of 40 providing the bulk of the runs in a total of 82-2 and an eight wicket win.

Farnworth professional Chris Street produced a superb all-round performance to lift his side to a handsome 116-runs win over Bradshaw.

The Australian first tormented the visitors with the bat hitting 65 not out, and with Chris Barrow also punishing the bowlers with an innings of 73, Farnworth were able to declare at 220-5 after 46 bowlers.

In the event they did not need the extra overs to end Bradshaw's misery, Street collecting 6-27 to help dismiss them for only 104.

Bradshaw's only performance of note came from their Australian professional Brad Newman, who followed up his bowling figures of 5-60 with his side's top score of 30.

The two respective professionals were also among the wickets when Tonge emerged 32-run winners over Farnworth SC. Circle's Ryan Cunningham took 6-59 but good knocks from Nigel Partington (52) and Simon Anderton (41), lifted the home side to 162.

Tonge pro Adil Nisar then took centre stage and his 5-56 knocked the heart out of the Circle, who were dismissed for a disappointing 130.

Another pro to earn his money on Saturday was Amal Delugoda, who masterminded Astley Bridge's 22-run win over Horwich.

Batting first, Bridge hit 185-1, Delugoda top scoring with 61, and 51 from Andy Northrop plus a quickfire 39 from Danny Guest.

Delugoda was then handed the ball and his figures of 5-72 plus 3-47 from Paul Burton proved decisive as the visitors were dismissed for 163. Eagley looked well set when they raced to 100-1, chasing a Kearsley total of 162.

Yet they reckoned without 18-years-old David Mather, who destroyed them with a seven-over bowling return of four wickets for five runs to leave them all out at 118.

The second team medium pacer would probably have done even more damage but under ECB rules, the teenager was restricted to bowling only those seven overs. As it was, pro Zander Debruyn collected 4-45 to remove the rest.

Earlier Debruyn top scored in the Kearsley innings with 52, while skipper Peter Morris contributed a valuable 48.

Gary Garner hit the only century of the day in Egerton's 24-run win over bottom club Little Lever.

His innings of 108 helped Egerton to 197-5 before Little Lever were bowled out for 173.

Egerton professional Mark price took 5-34, while Lever's top scorer was Anthony Hilton with 46.

Happy Heaton sent Westhoughton spinning to only their second defeat of the season after dismissing the leaders for 104 on Saturday.

Jonathan Fearick (6-56) and pro Narendra Hirwani (4-41) were responsible for that lowly total, although Ian Pilkington did his best to keep them at bay with a stubborn innings of 68.

The Heaton reply was not without its moments, especially when they lost their first four wickets for seven runs.

A fifth wicket partnership of 43 between Fearick (22) and Ian Bradshaw (17) managed to ease that situation but Westhoughton regained the upper hand and looked the more likely winners when they had Heaton struggling again at 61-8.

This time, pro Hirwani (35) and Simon Booth (13) came together to defy the home bowlers, and it was their 49-run eighth wicket partnership that eventually sealed Heaton's two-wicket win.
