A 92-YEAR-OLD man was tricked into letting two men into his house after a woman knocked on his door asking for a glass of water.

The man, of Hillhouses, Darwen, was not injured in the incident but police are urging people not to allow strangers into their homes.

A woman, described as in her 40s, 5ft, and of stocky build, called at the house at 5pm on Saturday.

DS Paul Rothwell said: "She asked the man for a drink of water. He invited her inside and as he did so two men sneaked in and searched the rooms.

"Nothing is believed to have been stolen but if anyone in that area received a visit around 5pm from someone asking for a drink, or anything they were not happy about, they should contact Darwen CID on 01254 353841 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111." One of the men was described as in his 20s, 5ft 4in, and slim with a shaven almost bald head.

DS Rothwell said: " We want to reinforce the warnings to everyone, particularly the elderly, not to let strangers into their house however believable they may seem.

"It is sad that we can't trust people in this day and age but that's the way of the world. There are people prey on people."
