WINNERS of the Northern Daily Telegraph Kemsley Scholarship began their 10-day trip to Austria.
The 12 East Lancashire students were the fifth winners to travel abroad, with previous trips to Sweden, Holland, Germany and Rome.
The students were to present the Austrian Burgomaster Dr Fanz Reiter with greeting letters from the Mayor of Blackburn, Coun John Stirrup, and Mayor of Burnley Alderman Joseph Herbert.

A CEMENT company aimed to put Lancashire on the European map with a £20m redevelopment. The programme would make the plant the most modern of its kind in Europe.

A NEW type of 'jack-of-all-trades' worker was introduced in East Lancashire hospitals to reduce the hours of over-worked doctors.
The 18-month pilot scheme for Blackburn Hospitals Trust was believed to be the first in the country to introduce medical support workers.
The part time workers were to act as clerks but also be trained to take blood and carry out ECG heart function tests.
