I WRITE in response to Maurice McHugh (LET, July 14) regarding the use of parking wardens in the borough. The aim of these wardens is to make the roads safer for all users, to stop neighbourhood nuisance and to assist the smooth flow of traffic.
The council has been under pressure, because of problems of lack of ability of the police to enforce car parking restrictions, to do this for some time.
This has been particularly the case from shopkeepers in many parts of the town and, for example, residents both in the Ewood area and those with houses close to Blackburn town centre.
The parking wardens have no targets or bonus on offer for numbers of tickets issued. Any surplus revenue over and above the cost of the service resulting from the enforcement of parking restrictions in the borough will be directed to public safety and improved traffic and transport schemes.
COUN ANDY KAY, Executive Member for Regeneration, Blackburn with Darwen Council.
