BUSINESSES in Bury and elsewhere in the north west have been issued a waste warning by the Environment Agency.
The Agency has alerted companies to the imminent changes to the way national hazardous waste is managed. This will affect the entire region from this month.
Further implementation of the European Landfill Directive will introduce a number of key changes to the north west regarding the management of hazardous waste. These include the following requirements:
A complete ban on the "co-disposal" of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes in the same landfill cell. This will mean that only landfill sites exclusively licensed to accept hazardous wastes in the north west will be able to do so.
The vast majority of hazardous wastes will now have to be pre-treated to alter the characteristics of the waste to reduce its volume or hazardous nature or to help in its handling or recovery prior to disposal.
In addition to regulating all sites in the region which will be licensed to accept hazardous waste under the new regulations, the Environment Agency plans to step up enforcement action to combat any illegal disposal of hazardous waste through fly tipping.
