THREE schools in the Leigh area are celebrating a boost of cash from the Big Lottery Fund for good causes to develop new and improved sports facilities.

Fred Longworth High School, Lowton Specialist Sport College and Culcheth High School received grants adding up to a total of £800,000.

The money will be used to build fenced, floodlit, multi-use games areas where pupils can improve their skills in football, rugby, tennis, hockey and dance. 6,500 pupils and wider community users stand to benefit from the high-quality sporting facilities.

The funding comes from the Big Lottey Fund's £750 million New Opportunities for PE and Sport Programme.

Launched in June 2004, the Big Lottery Fund distributes half of all National Lottery good cause funding across the UK.
