I WAS interested to read about Burnley Council's response to the proposed reorganisation of secondary schools in the borough.

This has confirmed the impression of many people that the creation of catchment areas will be a negative move, creating greater division between communities.

Another point that the county council do not seem to have considered is that secondary schools are being encouraged to specialise in particular areas of the curriculum.

This is intended to increase the diversity of schools and widen parental choice. However, if each school has its own rigid catchment area, then the opportunity for parents and children to choose between different schools will be denied.

If the county council wishes to gain popular support, they will have to come forward with more imaginative proposals.
