A FRIGHTENED cow drowned when it leaped into a well during a thunder storm. The animal jumped through the wooden well cover and into the deep drinking water at the bottom. It was discovered by landowners Peter and Linda Bateman at their Higher Ramsgreave Road Farm.

POLICE in Colne were searching for a mystery driver who crashed his van at Horton-in-Craven during the night and left it in the road extensively damaged and covered in blood. There was anger among councillors and pensioners as North West Electricity chiefs announced profits of 18.1million but simultaneously announced price rises.

A FATHER and son swept away in Burnley's River Calder were saved by a projecting rock only 20 yards short of Oxford Road Culvert, the scene of several fatalities in previous weeks. The drama began on Townley Holmes, where Mr Ellis Eastham, 44, of Swainbank Street, and his son Peter, seven, were playing football not far from the river. They were swept away as they tried to retrieve the ball from the river.
