I WISH to congratulate Margo Grimshaw on her courage and commitment to this borough.
It is refreshing to learn that someone recognises a need to improve this important area without resorting to takeaways, pubs or clubs.
She is quite right in her comments regarding the drunken, yobbish behaviour by the younger generation who frequent the centre pubs and clubs.
In LET Letters (July 23) some people are apparently expecting Margo to accept some of the blame for this culture. Yes she has provided the establishments and alcohol in order that people can socialise but I'm sure she didn't force drinks down their throats until they were violently drunk.
It is the individual who is responsible for his/her intake and behaviour.
Jack Straw comments appeared less than encouraging and if he thinks the situation now is no different than when 'teddy boys' and 'mods and rockers' occupied the town centre streets when I suggest he listens more to Mr Blunkett: at least he acknowledges the problem.
So, good luck Margo, I hope you succeed.
GORDON ECCLES, North Bank Avenue, Blackburn.
