A TALENTED dancer is hoping to take his first steps to stardom after winning a place at a prestigious London dance school.

Simon Robinson was handpicked from 2,000 applicants for a scholarship at the prestigious Urdang Musical Theatre Academy, despite starting dancing only five years ago.

He now hopes he can re-create the success of the hit movie Billy Elliot, which shows a talented teenager from the North East making it big in the dance world.

Simon, 21, from Whinney Lane, Blackburn, said: "When I was 16 I went to watch my younger brother dancing in a show and realised it was full of girls - that's what attracted me. I found I really enjoyed it and progressed from jazz, to ballet, salsa, tap, ballroom and musical theatre dancing, which is what I would ultimately like to do.

"I got lots of stick from my mates, which was hard at first, but dancing really became my passion and hopefully will provide me with a great career."

Simon was spotted in April last year by Kathy Foster, who runs the KLF Dance Academy in Burnley, and after a lot of hard work she encouraged him to apply to the school.

She said: "He started his dancing career really late. To think he has won a scholarship when he was up against lads who have been dancing since they were three or four is just amazing.

"We are really proud of him and hope this will give him the opportunity to pursue a career in musicals. The college has obviously recognised Simon's raw talent. With cultivation he could go on to be very successful."

The three-year scholarship for the academy in Covent Garden will cover the £13,500-per-year fees, but Simon is looking for East Lancashire sponsors to support his studies. For more details contact Simon on 01254 696755.
