Leigh RMI 1 Everton XI 0: LEIGH RMI continued their build-up to the start of the season with an encouraging win over an Everton XI at Hilton Park.
Trialist Chris Simms scored the winner 10 minutes from time.
And the striker did his chances of securing a permanent move no harm with an impressive display upfront alongside the experienced Alex Meechan, who was playing his second game in two days, having turned out for Barnet the previous night.
Manager Phil Starbuck is still keen to strengthen his squad, and has a game against Manchester City at Hilton Park on Saturday and a friendly with Newcastle Town the following week to have a last look at possible signings.
The boss was disappointed this week when he agreed terms with Blackpool for Matthew Blinkhorn and Steve McMahon Jnr, but both players turned down the chance of a loan move.
He said: "They are not going to play at Blackpool. They have been told they are not wanted and this was a chance to put themselves in the shop window. I am staggered, it makes you wonder what goes through these lads' heads."
"I was disappointed with the first half, but we made a couple of changes at the break and we looked a lot stronger and passed it well. It was a great result for us and things are looking good.
"Simms came on for us and caused problems with his pace, and I will be having a chat with him and a couple of other players this week."
